The
sadhana of cooking requires you to connect your inner space
with your external environment. Look around your kitchen and
begin to envision the space you would like to see exist around
you. In sadhana, we have the power to manifest sacred space.
The
kitchen is a sacred space. Think of yourself as a multidimensional
artist. Your Kitchen is your dimensionless field of infinite
play--the room to which you retreat to revel in color, sound
texture, and movement. The myriad aromas, sounds, tastes,
and textures of nature's foods enliven every on of our cells
and memories. The nose becomes a direct means to consciousness;
the eyes become the gateway to divine light; the ears, the
pathway to inner harmony. The tongue absorbs a kaleidoscope
of flavors; the sense of touch allows us to experience the
temperatures and textures of the universe. All of these
experiences have the power to bring our inner rhythms into
harmony, making us more aware of the essences of life.
When
looking around the Wise Earth kitchen, we savor the delightful
profusion of sensory stimuli with which we are surrounded:
the smell of roasted sesame seeds as we grind them with
our mortar and pestle; the aroma of cumin seeds roasting
in ghee; the soothing "shhh" sound as we pour the seeds
into the cooked dhal. We never tire of smelling the fragrant
summer masala -fennel, coriander, cumin and ginger,
all ground together; of hearing the hiss of mustard seeds
popping in a hot skillet; of inhaling the aroma of saffron
and cardamom boiling in milk; of noticing that the pale
yellow color of the herbed milk resembles the first light
of dawn.
